So of course with just 5 hours to do before leaving to Tennessee with friends to spend Thanksgiving at their parent's house, I am not packing or doing laundry or any of the 100 other things I need to do before leaving, no I am brousing the internet and totally distracted by this really great artist!

I just discovered Kate MacDowell, she is such an amazing ceramic sculptor! Really, check out her stuff. I wish I had a ton of cash and become an art collector!

warning: this is yet another rant about contributing to magazines.

Ouch indeed. So I was chatting with a stylist friend of mine about working together this weekend and she mentioned that she saw my work in Ouch! Magazine. Funny, I thought. I submitted 2 stories to them ages ago but never heard from them again so I assumed it was a no go and gave it to another magazine/ One of the stories was the accursed beauty shoot I did that I was kind of dick over by a different magazine. Maybe it's the story and not me. I don't know.

Anyways, I looked and there is it on their website. So I emailed the editor to get my 2 copies of the print mag as is standard and to get the high rez. She emailed me back saying that they gave away all their free copies and that I can buy one for $5! Wow, selling me back my own work.

It is industry standard that I am letting them use my images to help them make money, the least any magazine can do is send me a few copies, no matter how small they are it is still a business. She said they were all given out back in September. If I had known they used my images back in Sept, I would have asked then. After a bit of back and forth, she said she would purchase a few copies and send them to me. good. I thought all this was done, but then I got the layout.

Me and my team are at least credited correctly but I have no idea where she got the makeup credits for the first shoot because none of those products were used. She only asked me about the makeup in the second story so I only gave her those thinking she was not going to use the first story, and even then she said that they were only being considered.

Hmmmm, probably not a good idea to mention this.... She is trying. It just seems that there are so many small mags out there with people running them with no previous experience and no knowledge of publishing standards on how to treat everyone involved. I only interned at SF Mag but from that know who to handle these sorts of things and contributors should be the first to get free copies. A happy team is much better than a bitter disgruntled one that feels a bit used.

Anyways, here are the stories behind the cut.

Ok, so i know I am terrible sporadic and uninformative with my postings but since moving to NY all i do is shoot, retouch, market, rinse repeat.

Thankfully I do get a break when I come home for the first week of December.

No plans yet for Thanksgiving, maybe go to the twin's parent's house in Tennessee. They have made noises about roasting an entire pig. Sounds like a hoe down in my future :)

Damn,I had good intentions to write a good post, but I am tired. So I leave you with a few images from an older shoot I am finally retouching....

Latest foray into music photography for my Kat+Duck venture.

We occasionally step into the realm of music photography. Definitely something we would like to do more of. When our friend Jonny Rose approached us to do some promo work for him, we jumped at the chance. He asked for a more contemporary electro feel to the images, simple plain background, more of a portrait of an artist. It was a relatively quick shoot, 2 wardrobe changes, and a couple silhouette shots. Overall pretty good job. The label likes it (really important), the artist likes it (also important), and we like it! For Jonny all things have been go since teaming up with Jive Records. We have got to see him really grow as an artist. When we met him we was in a musical duo but in the past year he has branched off on his own and really has come into his own!

Elena Test (©2009 Kat+ Duck)

hair: Meen Hair

MUA: Daniel K

styling: Francesca Barbarosa Otto

model: Elena Hernandez @ Next Model Management

We had the delight of shooting Elena who was in town for a brief while visiting from the UK. At the time she was visiting agencies to get signed, but one look at her portfolio and we knew she would not have trouble finding one to sign her, but to choose which one she wants be be with. Since then, she is now signed with Next Model Management and shooting in LA! Congrats Elena!

Styling the shoot was Francesca Barbarosa Otto from Italy. The concept was black and white to really take advantage of the studio cove (it has since turned into a green screen film studio). The shoot was all about styling, shapes, design, and silhouette.

Sorry, no terrible stories about how the whole shoot went to shit this time. Though I am thinking a tighter crop would be an improvement...

Yeay redesigns! So things are coming along swimmingly for our redesign. So far we have a blog and a twitter thing going on, now to tackle the website monster. Going into business for yourself takes a LOT of time with very little back, sometimes I think I should have got a day job, oh wait, no I don't think so....

So we went for a faux Luis Vuitton sort of repeating pattern, since we are fashion photographers, but I think the website will have to look a little less busy. We got the logo thing down, fonts picked, colour scheme..... I do like playing graphic designer form time to time. I do NOT however like CSS, super tricky to redo our layout on our wordpress! Times like these I remember why i am not a code monkey.

I have been obsessed with the McQueen show for this season! Not that I found prior reasons lacking, but in all honesty I was not as excited with a few of his past seasons. I LOVE McQueen for the other worldliness he brings to his shows. To watch his show is not to watch another model walk down a shiny white catwalk wearing ridiculously overpriced separated you will see knocked off in the local high street shops in a few seasons. No, to watch one of his shows is more akin to seeing a performance with costumes you would imagine in in a dream, or at least in a west end show. It started with a very sensual underwater video that had a distinct music video quality. It was a very inspiring show though a little long. It was called Plato's Atlantic. The prints were gorgeous and the shoes amazing! The show started in vibrant colour ways of snakeskin prints on what I imaging to be silk matched with shoes reminiscent of fetish ballet shoes and equally easy to walk in judging by the models cantor. The show progressed from above ground to an underwater inspired palette of shimmering blues and iridescents. I am completely in love and am dying to shoot these pieces!

If you have no idea what i am talking about you can see it here, thanks to the ShowStudio blog:

Other inspirational videos on the ShowStudio blog I have been watching lately is the winning movie made by Ruth Hogben for Gareth Pugh. Ruth Hogben has been awarded a prize for her Gareth Pugh A/W '09 film at the second annual A Shaded View on Fashion Film festival in Paris. That is another really fantastic fashion blog written by Diane Pernet. It's not to be missed. A Shaded View That being said, the film it a stark contrasty affair showcasing models in Pugh's designs walking a undulating to a rhythmic almost industrial beat. Using freeze frames, split frames, and mirroring editing techniques, Hogben really makes this video rock. She creates a mood and feeling that is entirely unique to and truly captures the essence of Gareth Pugh and his vision.

Seriously watch this film: Pugh

Ok, so bad news form the adjuster today.  Apparently the damages are more than the worth of my car so so fixing it.  Scrap time.  I was planning of getting rid of it in a few months, now that it is time to go, I feel a little sad after this 13 year journey with my car...

So now I faxed the police report to the adjuster and I think the insurance (theirs not mine) are going to give me the value of my car (HA! probably a few hundred dollars!), then they tow the car and sell it for parts....  boo, I am going to miss my car, and all the grocery shopping I did with it. Oh well back to pricey groceries and wine since they are within walking distance.

The other test we recently finished with Major Model Management (Tsubasa) was another shoot that originally was supposed to be something completely different.  With the beautiful new white cove studio reserved, we had everything lined up for a 9am shoot.  It was going to be a full fashion story with 6-8 looks based on architectural shapes - very strong graphics and silhouettes.  9am rolls around no model no fashion..... hmmmm, not to fear, the name of the game is improvisation.  We called our favorite people over at Major and they sent over Tsubasa, a very beautiful model from Japan.  Fashion showed up right before then with a newly inspired Michael Jackson look.  Not what was planned on, but working none the less.  The unfortunate part of the day was that we had lost time and instead of a full fashion story that we could shop around, we had to limit it to a test since we had to be out of the studio by 5pm.  Stll, some lovely images and we now LOVE shooting on the cove, and shooting in black and white!

Wow I almost feel like I am getting on top of my workload.  Being an independent contractor starting a new business is a HUGE time sink!

Here is another blog post (if you do go to the blog I promise that we are working on the layout and design and it will look much better soon!)

http://blog.katandduck.com/

2009.08.15

The joy of photography is the lack of immediacy of which we can show our work to the general public.  First we have to wait for selects from bookers, then we have to do the post production on the images, and then we have to wait and see if they are going to in fact be published and if they are when the visibility embargo ends on them.  Only then can e post images on the blog.  That being said we did a shoot with our pop star friends Dirt Mansion.  They are another great creative team, Katie and Johnny.  Check them out!

http://www.dirtmansion.com/

We got really great access to this beautiful location in Manhattan which really helped set the mood of the shoot.  With the aide of a fantastic stylist who pulled some really current designer fashion, we pulled off a pretty good looking shoot, if I do say so myself….

So some of the aforementioned collaborations with Duck....

We did a beauty test for Click Model Management.  This time we tried for pretty.  Figured e needed to have a nice collection in our newly formed portfolio, not just a one trick pony.

Oh and a few ultra beauty from our first shoot.  This one was such a quickie.  We had a MUA friend in town visiting for a few days and we grabbed a girl from Red Models and threw together a real quick shot, say done in an hour!

Ok so if you don't already know, my partner Duck and I have formed a photography team.  This helps us in that we combine our strengths, 2 people are better at producing and even better at brainstorming and conceptualizing, 3 Kat + Duck seems to get better response!

So here is a bit from our blog.  Nothing has debuted yet, since we acve to catch up on work, fix a bunch of layout issues with the blog and build our website before we debut and do our first marketing push, but soon I hope to show more :P

We have a lot of shoots currently under review right now and hopefully will be able to share the final outcomes really soon.  We had a shoot with this fantastic upcoming fashion designer, Samantha Sleeper – keep an eye on her, we have a feeling she is going to do some spectacular things.  The story is dark and moody, glamorous and sexy, we love love love this shoot and just cannot share yet!  We also have been experimenting on the cove in the downstairs studio – an entire room of white coved loveliness!!!

As always in the meantime, we have outtakes!  You do just love seeing our beautiful faces!

Oh yes, and in other news, we hung out the other day with one of Duck’s photographer friends from San Francisco, Hudson Cuneo.  Check out his work -it’s divine!

www.hudsoncuneo.com

We went out to Coney Island last Saturday, something I have not done since I did that shoot for Auxilliary Magazine’s Summer issue!  It was a perfect day, nicely overcast and threatening to rain.  So we grabbed umbrellas and went to the seaside.  Sadly everything was closed except one lonely Peruvian roast chicken stand.  With the promise of beer we sat down and oredered some chicken and plantains only later to find out that the aforementioned beer was not to be!  It was still a great day talking shop and a nice excursion out from the photography studio!

Sometimes I feel that I am not where I should be at this point in my life.  It's a rather depressing feeling and I hate feeling this way, but my goals are rather high and I am not too sure how to get there...

Tomorrow I need to be productive and feel like I have accomplished something.  Maybe that will help.

On the up side my Uncle just offered me a return flight to England for my Birthday....
